Firecrackers at Night

Brother Jim, Little Joey, and me

Feeling just as free as can be

Waiting for the sun to go down

At the old plant grounds outside of Audubon town

Ruben's late but he's worth the wait

His face was painted by a brush with fate

Now the sun is low and the moon is high

Perfect day to light up the night

Ruben's got his dead daddy's gun

He remembers when his daddy said, "Listen son,

"A coward is the one who fails to shoot."

Now Ruben sees a heavenly thing

It was an enemy drone or a bird on the wing

And bang bang, buddy, Ruben had what it took.

Toss a Roman candle right into the gorge

It glows like the ghost of a campfire at Valley Forge

Where freedom was born

And where death to freedom has come

They were patriots then, just like you and me

They called them regenerate and free

And now they call us (you know what they call us, Little Joey?)

Degenerate and dumb

Lock the door, baby

Turn out the light

There's nothing to see here, honey

There's no one to fight

It's just me and the boys and the noise you're hearing

Are firecrackers at night

Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly what a day

Brother Jim's getting lit and he's got plenty to say

He been thinking about the commies and the mujahideen

He been thinking 'bout a vision that he had in a dream

"We were naked and kneeling under the enemy's sword

They were wearing their camo gear and they were praying to their lord

Then their leader rose up and he bellowed at the sky,

"These boys are animals and infidels and now they must die!"

"Forgive me, brothers," said Brother Jim

"But that's about the time when the dream went dim,

"Still I think we switched places, us and them, and Lord...

"I can't recall the difference anymore

"They were sitting on a Mazda,

"Now we're on a Ford..."

Alright?

Fire

Ruben shot him just so he'd know

That these colors don't run and your panties shouldn't show, alright?

I can't begrudge these patriotic boys

For raising their fists and making some noise

Revenge upon your brother is the holiest sin

But I sure will miss Brother Jim
